My old hard drive is corrupted and I want to salvage the files on it using a data recovery program I've downloaded. However getting the program to read it is difficult. Do I need to reformat the hard drive? When I go to reformat it says this will erase all data on the disk, but according to other websites I've read it should be fine and I should still be able to salvage files. Which is correct?

I went to COMPUTER where I would see the three main icons....the Hard Drive, Recovery hard-drive and the CD/DVD disk drive icons...but now I'm missing the CD/DVD icon. I can't burn my music onto a CD nor play my DVD's on my HP Laptop. How can I reconnect it?

This is a Maxtor One Touch III external hard drive. I disassembled it to find it contains two Seagate Barracuda 750 GB (model 7200.10) drives connected via a controller. Only one hard drive is damaged, but since both use the controller in JBOD mode, I need both to work to access the disk information on them. The sound you hear when turning on the disk is like a spring or "boing", followed by the infamous clicking of a dead hard drive. What I would like to know is if this is curable and if it's simply a malfunction of the board on the drive.
